monday.com Connect Boards and Automation Limits: What Breaks When an Enterprise Connects Many Boards, and How to Work Around It
Connecting two boards on monday.com takes a minute. Connecting a hub board to every client, project, and department board in a large account is where it starts to hurt: caps on how many boards and items can be linked, mirror columns that go blank for some users or cannot be sorted, links that quietly disappear when items move, and a monthly automation quota that cross-board recipes burn through. This is the full list, with sources, and how I replace fragile links with a two-way sync built in n8n or custom code.

1. Why connecting many boards hurts at scale
Large accounts end up with the same shape: one hub board (clients, accounts, or a portfolio) linked to dozens or hundreds of project, department, and task boards, with Mirror columns pulling status, dates, owners, and numbers up and down the chain. monday.com's own guidance for high-level and low-level boards is built on Connect Boards and Mirror columns (high- and low-level boards). It works well at a small scale. Every limit below is one that teams meet as the number of boards, items, and users grows.
2. Connect Boards limits
| Limit | Basic | Standard | Pro | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boards one board can connect to | 1 | 5 | 20 | 60 |
| Linked items per board | 10,000 | 100,000 | ||
| Links in one cell | 750 | |||
| Items per board | 10,000 | 100,000 | ||
| Connected boards per dashboard | 1 | 5 | 20 | 50 |
Sources: linkage limits, board item limits, and developer limits. On Enterprise, one board can connect to at most 60 other boards; only Portfolio boards go higher (mondayDB 2.0). Some older monday.com pages still show 200, but 60 is the ceiling a regular board runs into. A board can also hold up to 60 Connect Boards columns (Connect Boards docs).
What this means in practice: a hub board linked to every project board runs out of connections long before an enterprise runs out of projects, and staying under the cap turns into someone's job. Board views also have their own ceilings: on mondayDB 2.0, Gantt, Timeline, Workload, and Table widgets still cap at 20,000 items.
3. Mirror column limits that bite
One missing permission blanks the data
Mirrored and connected data only appears if the viewer has access to every board in the chain and the right column viewing permissions. A single missing permission at any step shows an empty column (permissions and connected data). In accounts with guests, private boards, and many teams, this is the most common "the board is broken" ticket.
Mirrors are not real columns
A Formula column can only use a mirror whose source is a Numbers column, and formula results do not always transfer through a mirror (formula docs). Grouping by a mirror works only when one item is linked and only for a few column types (group by). Mirror columns are not supported in My Work (My Work). Users have long asked to sort and filter by mirrored columns (community request).
Depth and shape limits
Mirrors go two levels deep, item names and Updates cannot be mirrored, column summaries are not supported, and a mirror pulling from several boards needs the same column type on every one of them (Mirror column docs).
Automations and webhooks look at the source board
A change made through a mirror happens on the source item, so the event fires there, not on the board showing the mirror; only some status recipes can use a mirror as a trigger (cross-board automations). Through the API, mirror values are read-only, cannot be filtered, and return nothing in the usual value fields (mirror API reference). Developers have reported API reads slowing sharply as mirror columns are added (developer forum).
4. Links that break quietly
- Moving items. Links survive a manual move only if the Connect column is mapped. Move automations cannot map it, and monday.com describes the results as sporadic (moving items). A moved item is also not a new item, so "item created" recipes do not fire.
- Archiving or deleting a board. Every link to it is removed (Mirror column docs).
- Templates. Managed templates do not support Connect Boards and Mirror settings (managed templates), so each new project board has to be wired up by hand.
- Separate accounts. No official page describes linking boards across two monday.com accounts, such as an agency's and a client's, and community answers say it is not possible.
5. The automation action quota
Cross-board recipes run inside a monthly action allowance. monday.com's support documentation says automations start on Standard (automations pricing); the pricing page lists 250 automation and 250 integration actions a month on Standard, 25,000 of each on Pro, and up to 250,000 on Enterprise (the support documentation describes the Enterprise figure differently). Each action a recipe runs counts; the trigger does not (actions and limits). Overage is taken from next month, and once the month is used up the account cannot add or edit automations (workflow actions). Recipes also have per-minute limits, and loops between boards can get them deactivated (why automations get deactivated).
6. How I work around them: sync data instead of linking it
Most of these limits come from one design choice: every board reading live from other boards through links and mirrors. The alternative is to keep each board's data in its own real columns and keep the boards aligned with a two-way sync built in n8n or custom code, driven by monday.com webhooks and the GraphQL API.
- Real columns, not mirrors. Synced values are ordinary Status, Date, People, and Numbers columns, so sorting, filtering, grouping, formulas, dashboards, My Work, and native automations all work.
- No linkage cap to manage. Which item pairs with which can live in a Connect Boards column where it fits, or in a mapping table outside monday.com when there are too many boards or items to link.
- Across workspaces and accounts. A sync can hold a token for each account, so an agency board and a client's own monday.com account can stay in step.
- Permissions you choose. Each board shows only the columns its audience should see, with no blank cells caused by a missing permission three boards away.
- Different labels and rules per board, cascades for renames and deletions, updates with mentions, and roll-ups to project and portfolio boards on a schedule.
- Fewer automation actions. Logic in n8n counts against API limits, not your recipe quota, and can batch work. API writes can still fire a board's own recipes, so the design avoids triggering chains it does not need.
- Monitored. Loop guards, a scheduled reconciliation for missed events, and Slack alerts when anything fails.
The trade-off is honest: a sync is something to build and maintain, and it has to respect the API's own limits (API rate limits). For two or three boards, Connect Boards and Mirror columns are usually the right answer. For a large account, the sync is what lets the boards keep growing. I explain the design in two-way sync between monday.com boards, and the agency build that uses it in the board sync case study.

How many boards can one monday.com board connect to?
One board can connect to 1 other board on Basic, 5 on Standard, 20 on Pro, and 60 on Enterprise; only Portfolio boards go higher. Each board also holds up to 10,000 linked items (100,000 on Enterprise), with up to 750 links in one cell. For an enterprise with hundreds of project boards, 60 connections run out quickly.
Why are my Mirror columns blank for some users?
Mirrored and connected data only appears for people who can access every board in the chain and have the right column viewing permissions. One missing permission at any step shows an empty column.
Can you connect boards in two different monday.com accounts?
Not with Connect Boards. No official page describes it, and community answers say boards in separate accounts cannot be linked. A sync built with n8n or custom code can hold a token for each account and keep boards in both aligned.
How do you get past Connect Boards limits?
By syncing data instead of linking it. A two-way sync built on webhooks and the GraphQL API writes values into real columns on each board and keeps track of item pairs itself, so it is not bound by linkage caps, and synced columns can be sorted, filtered, used in formulas, and trigger automations.
How many automation actions does each monday.com plan include?
As of October 2026, monday.com lists 250 automation and 250 integration actions a month on Standard, 25,000 of each on Pro, and up to 250,000 on Enterprise, which its support documentation describes differently. Its support documentation says Free and Basic do not include automations.
