Flesch Reading Ease ranges from 0 (very hard) to 100 (very easy) and maps to a plain-English label from "Very Easy" to "Very Confusing." Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level translates the same inputs into an approximate US school grade, which is why most marketing and UX writing guidance targets grade 7-8 — readable by the widest possible audience without dumbing down the message. What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score for marketing copy?
Scores of 60-70 or higher (Standard to Easy) work well for most ads, emails, and landing pages, since they read comfortably for a general audience without feeling simplistic.
Why does the tool ask for more text on short samples?
Both formulas rely on averages across multiple sentences. With only one sentence or a handful of words, the words-per-sentence and syllables-per-word ratios are too noisy to produce a meaningful score, so the tool asks for a couple of full sentences first.
How is the syllable count calculated?
It uses a widely-used approximation that counts vowel groups per word, adjusting for a silent trailing "e" and a leading "y," with a minimum of one syllable per word. It is not a dictionary lookup, so unusual or technical words may be off by one syllable, but it is accurate enough for scoring general copy.
Is my data uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript — nothing you type is transmitted, logged, or stored anywhere. You can even use it offline once the page has loaded.
